The Sun

A child rides a white horse beneath a radiant sun: a card of happiness, contentment and the simplicity of a child's heart.

The Sun — tarot card from the 1909 deck

Card art by Pamela Colman Smith (1909), public domain

Upright

Yes / No: Yes

The Sun stands for material happiness, contentment and a fortunate partnership. Waite associates it with direct rather than reflected light and with the simplicity of a child. Notice what is genuinely going well; an open, uncomplicated attitude may help you enjoy it more fully.

  • happiness
  • contentment
  • material well-being
  • fortunate union
  • simplicity
  • innocence

Reversed

Yes / No: Yes

Waite gives the reversed Sun the same meanings in a lesser degree: happiness and contentment that are present but muted or partial. Notice the good things that are already here, even if they feel smaller than you hoped, and what might be dimming your enjoyment of them.

  • muted happiness
  • modest contentment
  • lesser well-being
  • partial good fortune

Love & relationships

Upright, the Sun brings warmth, joy and an easy, open-hearted connection, a bond where affection feels simple and is freely shown. This may be a happy partnership or a playful, sincere spark between you. Savor what feels good without overcomplicating it.

Reversed, the Sun describes happiness in a relationship that is real but muted, as if clouds were drifting across a bright day. Stress, distraction or high expectations may be taking some of the shine off the connection. Notice the small, good moments that are already there, and what might let more lightness back in.

The image

A naked child on a white horse carries a red standard; Waite considered this mounted version the better symbol. Behind the child stands a walled garden, which Waite connects with the life of the senses that humanity leaves behind on its journey home. Above it all shines the great sun of this world.

Symbolism

Waite reads the card as a passage from the visible light of this world toward the light of a world still to come, a light that leads aspiration on and is pictured as a child's heart. The sun here is spiritual consciousness, shining directly rather than by reflection. The child stands for simplicity and an innocence grounded in wisdom: a sign of the world restored, leading the animal nature in perfect harmony.

In a reading

Upright, the Sun is a cue to notice and enjoy what is bright and straightforward in your life right now. Reversed, contentment may still be present in a quieter form. What would help you see it more clearly?
