A crowned woman sits before ripening grain and a waterfall: Waite's card of fruitfulness and the abundance of the visible world.

Upright
Yes / No: Maybe
Waite gives the upright Empress fruitfulness, action, initiative and long life, but also the unknown and the hidden, along with difficulty, doubt and ignorance. It is a good moment to notice what you are helping to grow, and where uncertainty or a gap in your knowledge may be shaping your next move.

Reversed
Yes / No: Maybe
Reversed, the Empress takes a brighter turn in Waite's list: light, truth, the untangling of complicated matters and public celebration. He also records an alternative reading, vacillation. Notice what is becoming clearer, and where you may still be wavering.

Love & relationships
Upright, the Empress speaks of warmth, generosity and a bond that flourishes when it is tended, along with the initiative to nurture it. Some doubt, or some unknown ground, may still surround how things are developing. It may help to see what is being nurtured on each side, and what kind of reassurance would ease the uncertainty.
Reversed, the Empress can describe clarity arriving after confusion: tangled feelings begin to loosen, and the truth of the connection becomes easier to see. There may be something worth sharing or celebrating, though a tendency to waver can linger. Notice where you feel sure and where you are still undecided.
The image
A stately woman with the bearing of a queen sits in rich robes, crowned with a cluster of twelve stars. A shield bearing the sign of Venus rests beside her, a field of grain ripens before her, and a waterfall pours down beyond. Her scepter is topped by a globe, the emblem of this world.
Symbolism
Waite calls her the earthly paradise and a mother of thousands, the figure of universal fertility and of the Word in its outer, visible sense. She is the door into this life, he says, while the way beyond it is a secret kept by the High Priestess. He also cautions that many older readings of her symbolism are simply wrong.
In a reading
Upright, the Empress draws attention to what is ripening in your life, and to where doubt may be holding you back. Reversed, she brings clarity and truth out of a tangle. What is ready to be celebrated, and what still feels unsettled?
