Nine of Wands

A watchful man leans on his staff before a row of staves: a card of strength under pressure and of delay and, reversed, of obstacles.

Nine of Wands — tarot card from the 1909 deck

Card art by Pamela Colman Smith (1909), public domain

Upright

Yes / No: Maybe

The Nine of Wands speaks of strength in the face of opposition. Waite pictures someone who would answer a challenge boldly and could prove a tough opponent. Alongside that resilience he lists delay, suspension and adjournment, so matters may be on hold. What are you guarding, and how long are you willing to wait?

  • strength against opposition
  • standing guard
  • bold defense
  • delay
  • postponement

Reversed

Yes / No: No

Reversed, the card turns to obstacles, adversity and calamity, with little of the upright card's sturdy readiness. Which difficulties feel largest right now, and which are within your influence? This may be a time to look for support rather than carrying everything alone.

  • obstacles
  • adversity
  • calamity
  • hard times

Love & relationships

Upright, the Nine of Wands often describes a guarded heart: someone who has been hurt before and stays alert, ready to protect what matters. A relationship may also be on hold, waiting for the right moment. What are you guarding against, and is caution keeping you safe or holding closeness at arm's length?

Reversed, the Nine of Wands suggests that a connection faces real obstacles, or that someone feels worn down by repeated difficulties. No one has to hold everything together alone. Which problems can you influence, which are not yours to fix, and where could trusted friends or other support help?

The image

A man leans on his staff with a wary, expectant look, as if bracing for an attack. Behind him stand eight more staves, upright and evenly spaced like a fence.

Symbolism

The orderly staves form a barrier at his back, which makes the man himself the last line of defense. Waite points to his sturdy build as a sign that he would hold his own if pressed. The waiting posture also explains the card's secondary meanings of delay and suspension: nothing has happened yet, but he is ready for whatever comes.

In a reading

When the Nine appears upright, consider where you are standing firm, and whether a pause is a strategy or simply a holding pattern. In reverse, it looks at the obstacles in your path and at the kind of help that might make them more manageable.

The yes / no answer is our editorial reading of the card’s overall tone, not a prediction.
