Knight of Wands

A knight rides past pyramids on a journey: a card of departures, travel and changes of home and, reversed, of breaks and discord.

Knight of Wands — tarot card from the 1909 deck

Card art by Pamela Colman Smith (1909), public domain

Upright

Yes / No: Maybe

The Knight of Wands speaks of departure, absence or a hurried exit, including leaving one's country or moving to a new home. Waite also reads him as a friendly young man whose horse reveals a hasty temperament. Is a move or change calling to you, and are you acting from eagerness or impatience?

  • change of residence
  • hasty energy

Reversed

Yes / No: No

In reverse, the Knight's journey is cut short by a rupture, a split, an interruption or discord. Plans that were moving forward may break off or pull in different directions. Look at where connection or momentum has been disrupted, and at what might help you mend or redirect it.

Love & relationships

Upright, the Knight of Wands brings warm, eager energy that arrives quickly and may move on just as fast. Distance, travel or a change of home may be affecting a connection, or someone may be acting on enthusiasm before thinking things through. Does the pace of the relationship feel exciting, impatient or simply restless, and what would steadiness look like?

Reversed, the Knight of Wands can signal a break or interruption in a connection: plans pulling apart, disagreements, or communication that has suddenly stopped. What has disrupted the bond, and could patient, honest conversation mend it? If the other person decides to step away, that choice deserves respect too.

The image

The Knight rides out as if on a journey, carrying a short wand. He wears armor, but Waite insists he is not riding to war. Low mounds or pyramids rise along his way.

Symbolism

Waite takes the horse's motion as the key to its rider's character: hasty and given to sudden decisions. The journey, the armor worn without hostile intent and the distant landscape all point to leaving, travel and relocation. Like every wand in the suit, his staff is in leaf, tying his restlessness to the vitality of Wands.

In a reading

An upright Knight raises two questions: what are you ready to leave behind, and how quickly do you want to go? Reversed, he brings breaks, interruptions or disagreements to the surface, along with the question of what would restore a sense of direction.
