King of Cups

A king sits calmly on a throne set on the sea: a card of responsibility, fairness and creative intelligence and, reversed, of dishonesty.

King of Cups — tarot card from the 1909 deck

Card art by Pamela Colman Smith (1909), public domain

Upright

Yes / No: Yes

The King of Cups can stand for a responsible, helpful person, the kind Waite associates with business, law or religion, and for fairness and creative intelligence. He also links the card to art and science and to those who practice them. He shows steadiness and imagination working together in practical choices.

Reversed

Love & relationships

Upright, the King of Cups brings emotional steadiness, fairness and a calm, responsible presence to a connection. Support may be offered without drama, and feelings handled with balance and creativity. Steady care and imagination can work together between the two of you.

Reversed, the King of Cups can mean that words and actions do not match, or that fairness and honesty are missing from a connection. Heavy disappointment can follow when trust is misplaced. Look at what the evidence shows, be careful before relying on promises, and protect your boundaries if you sense manipulation or unfair treatment.

The image

The King's throne rests on the open sea. He holds a large cup in his right hand and a short scepter in the other. A ship sails nearby, and on the opposite side a dolphin leaps from the waves.

Symbolism

The cup, Waite explains, naturally points to water, and water is present in every court card of this suit; here the throne floats on the sea itself. The ship and the leaping dolphin complete a scene in which everything rests on water, yet the King stays composed and upright. In Waite's scheme, Cups court cards can also stand for people with blue or gray eyes and light brown or fair hair.

In a reading

Upright, the King looks at calm, fair leadership and at blending practical sense with creativity. Reversed, notice where dishonesty or unfairness might be present, in others or in yourself, and what a more honest course would look like.
